By Mr. Myers

The grading period has ended, and we, the students, staff, faculty, and administration would like to celebrate the achievements of AAEC South Mountain.

We have completed our assignments. We have studied for and passed our exams, both at the high school and college level. Some of us have represented our school with distinction in competition. Some of us have been accepted into myriad colleges, universities, trade schools, and military branches. Much has gone right these last few weeks and we all deserve to celebrate the accomplishments that we have worked so hard to make a reality. And so we shall. Let the carnival begin!

This Friday, February 8th, we will gather as a school to recognize ourselves and each other. But where is this to happen? When does it start? When does it end? What is there to do? And perhaps most importantly, what is there to eat?

The Schedule

7:30 A.M. – 8:30 A.M. Breakfast – Sra. Sanchez, mother of senior, C. Sanchez, has made 400 breakfast burritos. They are available on Main Campus and will be sold for $1.00 per burrito. These will be sold, first come, first served. Annex Students, check in with your Annex teachers. We will put aside burritos for students that commit to buying them.

8:10 A.M. Attendance and Free Ticket Issue – All students must check in with their first hour teacher in their first hour classroom. Before we begin the day’s celebration, we need to know that all of our students have safely arrived for the day. Annex students, you must check in at the Annex at this time. As this carnival is a celebration of all of our achievements, each student will be issued a few free tickets at their time of check-in for attendance.

8:30 A.M. – 9:00 A.M. Carnival Sneak Peek – All students may start the digital scavenger hunt. All students may explore the classroom games and activities. All students may try their hand at the carnival games. This is your sneak peek at the challenges that stand between you and a prize (did we mention that there are giant stuffed animals?!)

9:00 A.M. – 9:30 A.M. Walk to SMCC for Student Awards Ceremony – As a school, together we will walk over to South Mountain Community College for an awards ceremony.

9:30 A.M. – 10:30 A.M. Awards Ceremony – While it is true that this is a chance to relax after a job well done, we should not forget that this is also a celebration of achievement. Seniors and Freshmen, you will be celebrated at the PAC Center. Juniors and Sophomores, you will be celebrated at the Student Center. It is time to recognize you for your hard work and the achievements that you have made.

10:30 A.M. – 11:00 A.M. Walk to AAEC South Mountain – After recognition, it is time to return to the Main Campus and start the carnival!

11:00 A.M. – 2:10 P.M. Carnival – So, what is this carnival? Please allow us to tell you.

Carnival Games:

There will be five different carnival games available to play. Winning two of five of these games is enough to get a golden ticket. If the carnival game requires multiple players, then each player that wins will receive credit toward their golden ticket. You may try these games as often as you wish. You may get back in line as often as you wish; but remember, you may only win the golden ticket for these games once.

Beanbag Toss
50¢ per person per attempt (6 beanbags per person per attempt)
A competition between players. The player with the most beanbags on the platforms at the end of the game wins. Oh, and as this a competition, and only one player can win, you may use your beanbag to knock your opponent’s beanbag off of its platform!
Ring Toss
50¢ per person per attempt (5 rings per person per attempt)
A competition against yourself. Can you get a three-inch ring over the neck of a bottle? What if we give you forty bottles for your target. But you must get three out of your five rings around the bottle in your turn in order to win.
Ball-Box-Maze
50¢ per person per attempt with up to four players (two tries per attempt)
A competition won through teamwork. A minimum of two players, a maximum of four, can you move a two-inch ball across a four-foot by four-foot maze without falling through the three-inch holes? Can you work together? Can you listen to each other? This is a test of skill, patience, and cooperation? Do you and your friends have what it takes?
Metal Maze
50¢ per person per attempt, played in pairs (three tries per attempt)
A competition attempted in pairs. Can you pass a two-inch metal ring over twenty feet of half-inch steel that has been twisted and turned without ever touching the inside of the ring to the outside of the steel? It is a game of patience and cooperation. It is a test of strong nerves and steady hands. Will you win?
Gravity Drop
50¢ per person per attempt, played individually (five tries per attempt)
A game for one player. Can you move a four-inch plastic ball uphill and defy gravity? Resting on parallel copper rails, the ball will travel upward as you slowly, carefully move the rails apart. Move the ball the entire length of the rails and drop it into the last basket to win. Will you be good enough?

Prizes:

Let’s talk golden tickets. If you read carefully above, you saw that there were many games that would give you a chance to win a golden ticket. Each golden ticket that is issued will have your name and the event that you won to receive the ticket written on it. Only you can redeem your ticket for a prize. You must have six golden tickets in order to exchange for a giant stuffed animal. How big is “giant” you ask? Well let us tell you. The average stuffed animal (unicorn, horse, teddy bear, dog, or catepillar) is approximately three feet from head to toe. If you have five golden tickets you may have your pick of these stuffed animals. But wait, we have one more stuffed animal. Gargantuan is probably the best word for this stuffed animal dog. From tip to tip, it is almost six feet! To get this, you must have a golden ticket from seven events that offer a golden ticket.

One more thing, there is a small requirement for the golden tickets. You must successfully complete the digital scavenger hunt (we will look for this ticket). You must successfully complete two of the carnivals games (we will look for this ticket). You must successfully complete four additional events. Only when you have this done and can exchange six different golden tickets with your name on them can you get a giant stuffed animal. Only when you have this done and can exchange seven different golden tickets with your name on them can you get a gargantuan stuffed animal.

One last thing! Students who would like to volunteer their time, have we got deal for you. Volunteer slots go to seniors first. Mr. Myers will sign off volunteer hours if you donate your time. He will place you where he needs you and at the end he will help you to get the hours that you need to graduate. Volunteer slots go to students that would like to exchange their time for tickets second. Everybody should have a chance to have fun at the carnival, though not all students can afford this carnival equally. Mr. Myers will give you tickets in exchange for your time. He will place you where he needs you. If you are interested in this opportunity, please email him directly at jmyers@aaechighschools.com. In the subject line write: School Carnival Volunteer. In the message write the following:
Your name (last, first)
Your grade
Whether you are requesting Volunteer Hours or Tickets

Please read the above information carefully. If you have questions, please come see Mr. Myers.
